Infant’s Mother ‘Desperate,’ Welfare Official Says
Officials of the Wyandotte County Social Services Department are seeking information on the background of a baby boy found abandoned yesterday in a telephone booth at 4039 Metropolitan in Kansas City, Kansas.
The infant was about 12 hours old when he was found wrapped in a towel by a passerby. The department said the mother must have been desperate.
The 5 pound, 8 ounce infant, 19 inches long, is a healthy boy, officials at Providence Hospital said yesterday after the child had been given preliminary examinations.
The Wyandotte County Department of Social Services issued the following statement yesterday:
“Our agency provides comprehensive services to expectant mothers, particularly if they are unwed or have other problem pregnancies. Our goal is to inform the mother of alternatives for the child if she is unable to make plans for herself. This baby’s mother must have had a desperate problem to have chosen this alternative.”
Mrs. Linda Rickey, the social worker in charge of the child, said yesterday the baby will be placed in a foster home and later will be eligible for adoption if the parents do not claim the child.
